The Most Unique Accommodation in Lake Macquarie — Sleeping on a Luxury Yacht
If someone asked you to picture overnight accommodation near Newcastle, you’d probably think of a hotel room, maybe a holiday apartment, perhaps a Hunter Valley vineyard stay if you were feeling adventurous. You almost certainly wouldn’t picture waking up in a private cabin aboard a 40ft French Beneteau yacht, watching the Lake Macquarie marina come to life through a hatch above your bed.
That’s exactly what makes Marina Luxe different from anything else in the Hunter Region.
What is Marina Luxe?
Marina Luxe is Silver Sun Sailing's overnight yacht stay experience, available for direct booking throughout the year. You spend the night aboard Spellcaster III - our immaculately maintained 40ft French Beneteau sailing yacht — moored in the Lake Macquarie Yacht Club marina precinct at Belmont, NSW.
No sailing required. No experience needed. Just an extraordinary night on the water, from $400.
Check-in is at 3:00pm. Check-out is at 10:30am. In between, the boat is entirely yours.
Where is it, exactly?
Spellcaster III is moored at Lake Macquarie Yacht Club, Ada Avenue, Belmont NSW 2280 on the shores of Lake Macquarie, Australia's largest coastal saltwater lake and one of New South Wales' most beautiful waterways.
It's approximately 25 minutes from Newcastle CBD, around 20 minutes from the Hunter Valley, and about 90 minutes' drive from Sydney-making it an ideal escape for a long weekend, a midweek reset, or a spontaneous overnight adventure without needing a flight.
Free parking is available at the yacht club.
What does a night on the water actually look like?
This is the part people always want to know. Here's how a typical Marina Luxe stay unfolds:
Afternoon. You arrive at Lake Macquarie Yacht Club and step aboard Spellcaster III. The Silver Sun team gives you a full orientation everything you need to know about the yacht, the kitchen, the heating, the sound system. Then they leave you to it. The afternoon is yours. Settle in. Pour something cold. Sit up on the bow and watch the afternoon light change across the lake. Lake Macquarie has an almost theatrical quality at this time of day — the water shifts from blue to silver to gold as the sun drops, and the marina hums quietly around you.
Evening. Wander in to Crusoe's on the Lake - an amazing waterfront restaurant right at the marina precinct. Take your time over dinner. This is not a night for rushing.
Come back to the boat under the stars. The cabin lights glow warmly below deck. Put on whatever movie or music you like. Sit out on deck with a glass of wine and do very little, exceptionally well.
Night. The cabins are private, comfortable and beautifully fitted out, with fresh linen. Spellcaster III has full heating and cooling, so you're perfectly comfortable in any season. As you fall asleep, the only sound is the gentle movement of water against the hull.
Morning. This is the moment guests talk about most. You wake slowly, naturally, to the sound of birdsong and lapping water. Make yourself a coffee unlimited tea and coffee is included and pop your head up through the hatch to watch the marina wake up. There is genuinely no better way to start a day.
How many people can stay?
Marina Luxe accommodates up to six guests across three private cabins, each sleeping two. Rooms are cosy so if you are planning to sleep in all cabins, packing clothes in small, soft bags is the best option. We will never book individual rooms to different groups - if you stay with us, you and your party have exclusive use of the yacht.
Pricing is per night:
One cabin: $400 Two cabins: $600
Three cabins: $800
Each cabin is private, with its own fresh linen. The rest of the yacht - the salon, galley kitchen, deck and bow - is shared. It works beautifully for couples, small groups of friends, or families wanting something genuinely different.
Why is this better than a standard hotel near Newcastle?
That's a fair question, and the answer isn't just about novelty — though novelty is part of it. A hotel near Newcastle gives you a room. Marina Luxe gives you a whole yacht, a waterfront location unlike anything available in the region, the freedom to set your own pace completely, and a story you'll be telling for years. The Lake Macquarie Yacht Club marina is one of the most beautiful spots on the lake, and being moored there overnight - with access to Crusoe's on the Lake and the Yacht Club bar, both offering Silver Sun Sailing discounts means you're not sacrificing dining or convenience for the experience.
Is it available in winter?
Yes - and honestly, winter might be the best time to do it.
Spellcaster III has full heating and cooling, so the cabins are warm and cosy no matter the season. Winter evenings on Lake Macquarie are unusually peaceful - fewer boats, quieter marina, crisp air that makes the cabin feel even more of a refuge. The lake doesn't lose its beauty in the cooler months; it just gets quieter, and that stillness is something special.
If you're looking for unique accommodation in the Hunter Region between May and September, Marina Luxe is one of very few experiences that actively improves in winter.
Who is Marina Luxe perfect for?
Over time, we've seen Marina Luxe attract a pretty wide range of guests. It's particularly popular with:
Couples celebrating anniversaries, birthdays or just a long-overdue escape. There is something deeply romantic about a night on the water- it strips everything back and creates the kind of uninterrupted time together that's hard to find anywhere else.
Groups of friends who want to do something genuinely different and memorable. Three cabins makes it an exceptional alternative to a standard Airbnb or shared house.
Sydney visitors doing a Hunter Region trip and looking for an accommodation option that's as good as the destination itself. At 90 minutes from Sydney, Lake Macquarie is close enough for a long weekend and far enough to feel like a proper escape.
People who've always wanted to sleep on the water but haven't had the chance. You don't need to sail, own a boat or know anything about yachts. That part is handled. You just show up and enjoy it.
Can I combine Marina Luxe with a sailing experience?
Absolutely - and many guests do. Silver Sun Sailing offers a range of on-water experiences alongside Marina Luxe, including:
• Tranquil Sunset Cruise - a two-hour champagne sail around the lake, leaving at around 4pm (depending on the time of year). Pair this with a Marina Luxe stay and you have an exceptional evening.
• Watch the Lake Wake - a beautiful morning sail, perfect to book for the morning of your check-out day.
Get in touch and we can build something tailored to exactly what you're after.
